Tizen, an upcoming open-source operating system for mobile and connected devices, may go beyond the territories of iOS and Android and find its way to other consumer devices like printers, cameras and even smart TVs, a tech site reported.
Intel senior technical marketing engineer Chris Norman said Tizen backers including Intel are exploring adding “profiles” for versions of the OS beyond smartphones and tablets.
“We’re waiting for Tizen to show up in commercial products. The APIs [application programming interfaces] are set, the bases are in place, we have the foundation for commercial products,” Norman said.
But he did not give a specific time frame for when Tizen would reach TVs, printers and cameras. Such plans are “forward looking,” he said.
He added their focus for now is to get the OS on smartphones, tablets and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
Norman noted Tizen can be customized for products like printers and cameras, which have less storage and are task-specific.
Tizen's backers include Intel and Samsung, with Samsung, DoCoMo and Orange likely to come up with the first genereation of Tizen-based mobile devices.
Presently, many of Samsung's smartphones and tablets run on Google's Android.
PC World said development on Tizen started in 2011 after the Linux Foundation and the LiMo Foundation merged their MeeGo and LiMo efforts.
The Linux Foundation is managing the development of Tizen, whose version 2.2 came out in July. Tizen 3.0 is due in 2014. — KDM, GMA News
